Hi. I’m Kate Dowse – gluten free recipe developer, traveller, photographer, blogger and Coeliac mum to a Coeliac teenager. At Gluten Free Alchemist, we are passionate about living Coeliac life without limits. Whether developing recipes, eating out, travelling the world or just being Coeliac, we always stay positive about our diagnosis and refuse to let it get in the way of enjoying life. We are without doubt ‘Positively Coeliac & Adventurously Gluten Free’. To read more about our story, check out my About page.
I love working with great free-from brands, with naturally gluten free ingredients and with products that make life fun and adventurous, whether to create inspiring recipes or to let the world know about products and experiences we love through reviews. You can see some of the brands with whom I have collaborated on my Brands & Features page

What we Do At Gluten Free Alchemist
Recipe Development
As a Coeliac family since 2011, the blog was originally set up to record the amazing bakes and recipes we were creating at a time when there was little on the supermarket shelves. We were trailblazers… determinedly finding ways to overcome the ‘limitations’ of our now wheat and gluten-free world, insistent that we would be able to eat everything that ‘normal’ people ate, but better! I pride myself on the fact that wheat-eaters rarely detect my bakes as gluten free and often tell me they taste better than wheat versions. There are now some 400+ uniquely developed Gluten Free Alchemist recipes on the blog.
I am obsessive about working on getting texture, as well as flavour right (even if that means many failed attempts) and am particularly proud of my incredible Gluten Free Wholemeal Brown Bread and its vegan cousin (Vegan Gluten Free Bread (wholemeal)) which (I am told through feed back) has revolutionised bread-eating for many Coeliacs.

“Thank you!! I have bread again, yes this is the best GF bread recipe I have made, and I can tell you I have made loads and loads…”
“I’ve just made this bread. It’s AMAZING!!… OH MY WORD. The texture is awesome, so soft but still with substance; the taste is fabulous too. Thank you so much. Ive been looking for a recipe like this for years”
“Shut the front door…the Alchemists dough-brew even converts to hand stretched bread rolls!”
“Day 3 and it’s still soft enough to eat without having to toast it….”
“Holy witchcraft! What sorcery is this loaf. I made at the weekend and it was inhaled by the offspring…it latest until this morning and was not in any way brick like…”
“Amazing. You Truly are an Alchemist”
Product & Restaurant Finds and Reviews
In addition to recipe development, I like to share finds and product reviews with my readers. In the world of Coeliacs, any new commercial food product or gluten-safe restaurant discovery brings great excitement. In my experience, new products are most frequently promoted by word of mouth via the Coeliac and gluten free community and particularly through social media, Facebook groups and blogs. I can often be found getting very enthusiastic on social media, letting the world know about a product find or when I have discovered a Coeliac-friendly restaurant, cafe or street food (whether in the UK or abroad).
Gluten Free Travel – Tips, Advice, Destinations and Experiences
As a life-long traveller and as our daughter has become older, our gluten free journey has literally gained wings and our gluten free adventures have left the comfort of our home kitchen to determinedly travel (and more importantly eat) without limits, whether in the UK or abroad. Coeliacs often lack confidence about whether they can travel and eat safely. Any reassurance they can gain from other Coeliac travellers and bloggers, can mean the difference between staying at home or venturing out. I am always keen to share Travel Tips, advice and experiences both on the blog and through social media.
Coeliac Life & Coeliac Parenting
Last but by no means least, as a Coeliac parent of a Coeliac child (who also had a Coeliac grandparent), we hope we know a thing or two about living the Coeliac life positively. We want that positivity to be infectious. My main aim is to show that not being able to eat gluten should never mean missing out on great food; getting out and enjoying life; or on travelling wherever you want to go. I use the blog and my social media platforms to share our ‘wins’ and finds and to encourage and support other Coeliacs to find the confidence to take on their own Coeliac world without limits. My Coeliac Parenting Guide provides guidance and support both to newly diagnosed families and those gaining confidence on the next stage of their childhood journey.
