Have you Heard? Schwartz has joined the gluten free gang……. A whole range of gluten free sauce mixes full of flavour, but without the hassle of having to cook from scratch!
Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to a supper club with a lovely group of like-minded bloggers, to celebrate the launch of the new Schwartz sauce mixes and to taste them in the flesh. The evening was held at The Hospital Club, a gorgeous private members club for the creative industries, right in the heart of Covent Garden.
I arrived ahead of the main event for a VIP talk with nutritionist Amanda Hamilton and to hear more about the development of the gluten free range. There was also an opportunity to have a sneak tasting of the Schwartz Bolognese sauce over some spiralized courgetti……. Full of flavour, this mix has no less than 9 herbs, spices and natural flavour additions. I was genuinely impressed and could happily have scoffed the whole bowl……. that however would not only have been greedy, but would have ruined my appetite for dinner.
The gluten free sauce mixes (of which there are 8 varieties) have taken about two years to develop and it was reassuring to hear that Schwartz has gone through a long and arduous process to make sure they are not only delicious, but also safe for Coeliacs and allergen-friendly. Sauce and spice mixes can so often be a hidden culinary danger zone to those of us with allergies and intolerances, but Schwartz have done all they can to remove the risk of cross-contamination…… from the sourcing of their ingredients to the separate factory area in which they are made. It is good to know that they carry the crossed grain symbol and have been approved by Coeliac UK too.

One of the most appealing things about the Schwartz gluten free range, is the inclusive recognition that Coeliacs and other gluten-avoiders have busy lives too and sometimes we just don’t have time to follow a fiddly recipe or individually combine our seasonings at the end of a hectic day. As a Coeliac household with two parents working full time, we know how much extra time is required in the kitchen to ensure food is well-prepared, nutritious, flavoursome and safe. The availability of quick substitute mixes can make the difference between yet another baked potato and something far more interesting.
For the main dinner we were taken to another area of the venue, where we were welcomed with a cocktail drinks reception…… mine was an amazing cinnamon-spiced Martini. Sadly, I didn’t get any photos, as I was too busy sipping it whilst getting acquainted with some wonderful bloggers who I had ‘known’ only virtually until now. I always find it a little nerve-wracking meeting new people, so I was glad for the Martini!
The supper itself comprised three delicious courses (and a goodly flowing of wine) which showcased the versatility of the mixes and gave us the opportunity to see just how exciting they are. The mixes can be used for much more than the picture on the packet…… and we were treated to a veritable feast which included everything from a starter of Mini Mac ‘n’ Cheese (made with Schwartz GF Cheese Sauce Mix), to mains of Chilli Chicken & Chorizo (with Schwartz GF Chilli Con Carne Mix), Steak with GF Peppercorn Sauce, Veggie Stuffed Peppers (using the Schwartz GF Bolognese Mix) and Fajitas using the GF Fajitas Mix. We were told by the guys from Schwartz that the choice of herbs and spices used were key in the development of the mixes….. I can confirm that the ‘choice’ works well. Everything I ate tasted fantastic……. Although I confess…… my favourite sauce of the night was definitely the Peppercorn…… a perfect hit of peppery heat without being overwhelming. Full as I was, it would have been rude not to indulge in a little dessert treat in the form of a Mango and Curry-spiced macaron. Yes really! Who’d have thought such a pairing? Distinctive and delicious!
Given the versatility of the mixes, I am clearly in for lots of fun playing at home to see what can be achieved.
After a fantastic evening and laden with a lovely goody bag full of treats (including a full set of spice mixes, a fab #glutenfreeflavour plate (which I am currently having to wrestle from Miss GF) and a very cute wooden spoon), I was ready for the train journey home, via a mad dash back to St Pancras.
So Thank you Schwartz for inviting me to such a wonderful evening. It was a real treat in my increasingly busy and chaotic world.
