My Food Guide to Greenwich Market and Greenwich
I’ve been coming to Greenwich Market in London for nearly 40 years and over time, it’s changed a lot. But it’s always done great street food. And let’s be honest… what’s a London market without something tasty to scoff?
The great news is that even being Coeliac (Celiac), there are still plenty of amazing eats to be found. I’ve scouted them out for you and in this Gluten Free Greenwich guide, I share all my favourite gluten free finds… both street food and ‘the usual’ restaurant suspects.

Where is Greenwich Market?
Greenwich is a UNESCO world heritage site famed for its maritime links and the Meridian Line (which ‘sets’ GMT or Greenwich Mean Time). It has loads of great things to see and do (whatever the weather and whatever your age). But it also has one of the oldest markets in London (dating back to 1700).
Set next to the river Thames it’s also one of the easiest markets to find… The best way to get here (in my opinion) is by River Bus which stops at Greenwich Pier (a 3 minute walk from the market). The River Bus can be caught upriver in central London or downriver at the O2 on the Greenwich Peninsula.
You can also get here quickly by train from Charing Cross or London Bridge and also DLR (Docklands Light Railway). The London Underground is less direct.

Gluten Free Greenwich Market – The usual rules apply
I’ve only included places in this Gluten Free Greenwich Market guide where (as a Coeliac) I feel happy to eat. It’s nonetheless important to note that places can sometimes change menus and suppliers. As such, the usual rules apply for making your own checks with vendors to ensure you are personally happy with the food safety in place.
ALWAYS tell stall holders and restaurant staff that you are Coeliac (or have a health-based dietary need) BEFORE ordering. And ask the questions that are important for you, to make a judgement on whether to eat there when you visit. If you don’t feel completely comfortable with what you hear or see, walk away and find somewhere else to eat.
If you don’t feel confident about what to ask, head over to my Page: Living with Coeliac Disease: Eating Out – Restaurants and Fast Food. Here you’ll find lots of tips on what to look out for and questions to ask when choosing an eating venue and ordering gluten free food.

https://www.instagram.com/merugalettes/
Meru (easy to find by their ‘Crêpes & Galettes’ banner) offer traditional French savoury Galettes made with gluten free vegan buckwheat batter. Be aware that while the Galettes are gluten free, the crêpes are NOT (but they are made on a separate pancake Bilig).

Brazilian Snacks, Greenwich Market
https://www.braziliansnacks.co.uk/
The Cheese Bread from Brazilian Snacks is to die for. Although it was the only thing available gluten free when we visited, I was happy that it was sold from the top shelf and handled with care. Grab and eat it while it’s warm and gooey as you browse Greenwich Market’s stalls!
Victus & Bibo, Greenwich Market (Saturday & Sunday)
https://www.instagram.com/victusbibo/
Victus & Bibo Offers vibrant, tasty modern Turkish street food. Although the wraps and cous cous are not safe, they offer gluten free chicken, lamb and halloumi dishes with salads.

Thai Kitchen, Greenwich Market
https://www.facebook.com/taothaikitchen/
I honestly don’t think you can beat a Thai street food curry, especially when served alongside a traditional Pad Thai. The Thai Kitchen offers a tasty range of curries (served with Pad Thai or rice). We tried the Chicken Green Curry and the Chicken Cashew Nut Curry (with Pad Thai) and they were both delicious. But they also offer veggie and vegan options. Everything was gluten free when we visited except the spring rolls. The portions are large too!

Chuckling Wings, Greenwich Market
https://www.facebook.com/chucklingwings/
Buttermilk Fried Chicken prepared, marinated and coated gluten free! Grab with chips as the buns are not safe!

Planet Pancake, Greenwich Market (every day) 100% GF ★
Planet Pancake offers 100% gluten free and dairy free mini pancakes, served in a big pile with a huge choice of toppings. An absolute MUST if you’re in Greenwich Market.
Rubys of London (Thurs to Sun)
Shop-Café within Greenwich Market
Ruby’s of London bakery started in Greenwich Market back in 2010 and they’ve been selling vegan cakes and baked doughnuts here ever since. This includes a beautiful and very delicious range of gluten free-vegan options. From perfectly Instagrammable cakes and muffins to quiches and savoury salads… all displayed in dedicated gluten free cabinets. Pop in and grab some, eat in or ‘to go’… They’re the best!

The Fudge Patch 100% GF & Vegan ★
7 Greenwich Market, London, SE10 9HZ
https://www.thefudgepatch.co.uk/
The Fudge Patch is a dedicated shop located in the heart of Greenwich Market selling handmade slab fudge which is all gluten free AND vegan. With flavours like Apple Pie, Ginger, Cherry Bakewell and Rhubarb and Custard, this is fudge at its most artisan.
Annie’s Treats 100% GF ★
Pink Vintage Van: Cutty Sark Food Market
https://www.annies-treats.co.uk
Annie’s Treats is a 100% gluten free stall that operates from a pink vintage van located at the Cutty Sark Market. They sell cakes, sweet treats and pastries (savoury and sweet) as well as hot and cold drinks. Open on weekends (although days and presence varies!)
Gluten Free Greenwich – Independent Shops and Bakeries
Arapina Bakery (Vegan with some gluten free)
8 Little Thames Walk, London SE8 3FB
Arapina is a vegan bakery in Greenwich (about 10 minutes walk from the market). But it also offers a range of beautiful gluten free vegan cakes (including large celebration cakes and raw options). The website is quite difficult to navigate for what’s safe and what’s not, so be sure to check the allergens for individual bakes and ask direct. (NOTE: Arapina also have a stall in the market, but when I visited, there were no gluten free options).

Paul Rhodes Bakery
37 King William Walk, London SE10 9HU
https://paulrhodesbakery.co.uk/
Paul Rhodes is a standard bakery, but subsequent to my visit to Greenwich, I discovered that it sells a gluten free bakery-baked white loaf (just in case you need it). I haven’t checked it out for safety, but it seemed appropriate to mention it anyway.
Dark Sugars Cocoa House
9 Nelson Rd., London SE10 9JB
If you’re in the area and you love chocolate, this is one place you HAVE to visit. Situated just around the corner from Greenwich market, Dark Sugars Cocoa House is a heaven for the senses. Selling high-quality chocolate, all but 4 flavours were gluten free. And they sell the most incredible real hot chocolate too! Ok, so nothing here is ‘cheap’… but then it’s not your average chocolate. And if you ascribe to chocolate quality rather than quantity, this is your place.

Dark Sugars Ice Creams
21 Nelson Rd., London SE10 9JB
https://www.instagram.com/dark_sugars_ice_cream/
Like its sister cocoa house (above), Dark Sugars Ice Creams (gelato) is rather delicious. A couple of flavours are not gluten free, but there’s a clear allergen menu available and the staff seemed able to serve with care to limit cross-contamination risk. I forgot to ask about cones as we chose tubs.
Amorino Gelato
40-42 Greenwich Church St, London, SE10 9BL
Amorino Gelato sells authentic Italian Gelato (beautifully shaped into roses), sweet treats, gelato cakes, gelato macarons and hot and cold drinks. All of the gelato flavours, the macarons and the gelato cakes are gluten free. They also have a number of vegan ice creams too. They are however, stupidly expensive!

La Maritxu Basque Cheesecake
7 Nelson Rd., London SE10 9JB
https://www.lamaritxucheesecake.co.uk
La Maritxu (pronounced mari-choo) of London sells the most decadent, rich and very creamy Basque Cheesecake… The cheesecakes are 100% gluten free and sold by the slice! With 3 stores across London, Greenwich is the latest to open.
Goddards at Greenwich
22 King William Walk, Greenwich, London, SE10 9HU
https://www.goddardsatgreenwich.co.uk/
Goddards at Greenwich is a centrally-located Pie and Mash shop which offers a handmade gluten free 100% minced beef pie and mash with gluten free liquor. It’s not a place I’ve tried, but two readers have separately mentioned it to me, so it’s important to include in the listing.

Nando’s
West Unit, Greenwich Promenade, King William Walk, London SE10 9HT
https://www.nandos.co.uk/restaurants/greenwich-cutty-sark
What’s not to love about a cheeky Nando’s? It’s our favourite national Afro-Portuguese chain restaurant serving delicious PERi PERi chicken and spicy rice. And they love to welcome the gluten free community by preparing our food with extra care. Let them know you are Coeliac/have allergies and the manager will come and take your order to ensure it’s made within their specific protocols.
Nando’s ‘Cutty Sark’ in Greenwich can also be found just by the pier, overlooking the Thames (next to Zizzi).

Happy Travelling and Eating

That looks like a great selection – definitely more than you could expect to try on one visit. Love the name “chuckling wings” and would love to taste those galettes. I went to Borough Market on my recent London visit and found it didn’t offer much British food – it seems similar here at the Greenwich Market. Which doesn’t mean that the food options are terrible but coming from a suburb of Melbourne with lots of Middle Eastern businesses it means that I find Turkish food is something I can easily get at home and would like to try other British specialties that I might not get at home – though not the venison sausage rolls!!!
Thanks Johanna. Yes… I know what you mean. I’m not sure the British were ever that good at ‘local’ street food, Maybe we just rarely had the weather for it… You occasionally find a cheese stall, but not much that’s grab and eat xx
Hi Kate. Great blog. You could also mention that the pie and mash shop in the market, Goddards sell a gluten free pie, mash and liquor. goddardsatgreenwich.co.uk Also, there’s a wonderful fudge shop, again in the market, The Fudge Patch. All their fudges are gluten free and vegan. thefudgepatch.co.uk
Thank you so much for those additions Steve. I will add them shortly xx
