Gluten Free Travel Guides
I’ve always loved travel and Gluten Free Travel is no exception. I (mostly) don’t see my Coeliac dietary limitations as a hinderance but as an adventure. As with many Coeliacs and gluten avoiders, part of the excitement of planning a short break or holiday is searching to find what exciting food awaits me (creating my own Gluten Free Guide to help me on the journey)… And then exploring all the foodie venues when I get there, relishing each and every new find and eating experience.
While cities, regions, countries and even continents vary considerably in their ability or willingness to feed the gluten free traveller, I never let that stop me. In even the most difficult situations, I know I won’t starve… There’s always plain meat, fish and veg to be had… simply cooked and perfectly sustaining… Or alternatively, the ubiquitous omelette that can be prepared in a clean pan to fill me up. It’s all part of the experience… And actually very little different to my experiences pre-coeliac. Even then, I obsessed over what I ate to ensure I remained healthy when in less than salubrious surroundings (after a particularly distressing bout of food poisoning in Turkey and a subsequent dose of dysentery staying in a 5* hotel on honeymoon!).
Guides for the gluten free community
Nonetheless, I appreciate not everyone can be bothered with spending hours in advance of travel searching for potential safe eating venues and that confidence to travel with Coeliac Disease (Celiac) varies from person to person. So… As I get back into travel following a relatively quiet couple of decades (and head towards a more freedom-filled retirement), I hope to share all I learn along the way… A Gluten Free Guide series from the UK and beyond to (hopefully) help all those with an equal desire for Gluten Free Travel.
When travelling gluten free, the usual rules apply…
Regardless of where you are travelling and how many recommendations you’ve seen for a venue (in these or other travel guides), it’s important you remain responsible for your own food safety. Venues change management, staff, ethos and recipes frequently, so what might have been safe last year, may not be safe today.
Recheck each and every venue when booking and on arrival to ensure you are personally happy they understand your health needs. Ask as many questions as you need to be sure cross-contamination is unlikely and that they ‘get’ what Coeliac Disease means for your health! Ask yourself “am I happy to eat here?” If the answer is no, walk away! If you’re newly diagnosed or aren’t sure what to look for, read my page: ‘Eating Out – Restaurants and Fast Food‘ for guidance.
And don’t automatically rely on accreditation by Coeliac associations either, particularly for large restaurant chains. While accreditation is a good indicator that a company has made a corporate effort towards our food safety, their venue staff change frequently. As a result, they’re often not well trained or knowledgeable and are less invested in ‘doing a good job’. I can honestly say I’ve been ‘glutened’ more in chain restaurants than anywhere else! While a small independent venue may feel like an ‘unknown’, they are far more likely to take the time to understand and as they frequently make dishes to order, can adapt them to ensure you are safe.
