Seeking out the BEST gluten free food in Camden

Camden Market (and the London Borough of Camden) has been a favourite haunt of mine since I was in my 20’s (that’s a long time!). The markets are a buzzing combination of new and retro and the street food has always been a draw. Even if you’re Coeliac (Celiac), this is one place you definitely won’t starve. Whether you want grab-and-scoff street food, a sit-down meal, or you fancy the thrill of a 100% gluten free bakery, Camden has loads of great gluten free food going on…

In this post, I help you navigate the best Coeliac-savvy eats the borough and market have to offer in my Gluten Free Camden guide.

Where is Camden?

When we think Camden, we automatically think of its markets. However, Camden Market is located in the broader area of Camden Town, which is located in the inner London Borough of Camden. The Borough of Camden also incorporates the area of Hampstead (and the famous Hampstead Heath and Highgate Cemetery), through Belsize Park and Primrose Hill, right down to Bloomsbury and parts of Covent Garden.

For the purpose of this Gluten Free Camden guide however, I’ll focus on the more central parts of the borough, incorporating Camden Town, Primrose Hill, Belsize Park and the inner edge of Hampstead. As a Coeliac, these each offer great gluten free food opportunities.

The closest London Underground (Tube) stations to access the main Camden Markets are Camden Town and Chalk Farm (both on the Northern Line). Where alternative stations are better, I’ve stated them next to the venues below.

Gluten Free Camden – The usual rules apply

My guide to Gluten Free Camden includes all the places where I (as a Coeliac) feel safe to eat. This is based on their being either 100% gluten free or because they offer a clear gluten free menu and/or an additional strong understanding of cross-contamination and allergen safety.

Nonetheless, it’s important to accept that venues sometimes change menus and suppliers. Thus, the usual rules are to check BEFORE ordering to ensure you are personally happy with food safety. ALWAYS tell staff you are Coeliac (or have a health-based dietary need). And be sure to ask questions and make observations necessary for YOU to decide whether to eat there.

If you don’t feel 100% comfortable with what you hear or see, walk away and find somewhere else to eat.

Unsure about what to ask? Head over to my Living with Coeliac Disease: Eating Out – Restaurants and Fast Food page for advice and tips.

This guide is split into 3 key sections:

  1. Gluten Free Camden Market (Street Food) (🔴)
  2. Restaurants (Independent and Chain) in the vicinity that cater safely gluten free (🟢)
  3. Gluten Free Camden Borough (other key venues for Coeliacs outside the vicinity of Camden Market, but relatively close by) (🔵)

Venues which are understood to be 100% gluten free are marked with a star ★

I’ve included an interactive map for on-the-ground reference, so you can locate venues easily.

Makatcha serves simple street food in the form of tasty Indonesian Coconut Curries served with rice… both meat and veggie. It’s 100% gluten free and dairy free, so it’s a perfect place for Coeliacs and delicious too!

I had their Coconut Lemon Chicken Curry which was mild in spice level. Ask for a taster of what you fancy… It’s a Camden gluten free ‘must try’!

Arepa is another 100% gluten free Camden street food stall with fabulous Venezuelan arepas (stuffed corn bread). There’s something quite irresistible about arepas and the father-son team who run the stall are fabulous characters! I had La Cartelua (with chicken).

El Pollote makes your fried chicken dreams come true, with Latino chicken from their street stall in Camden Lock Market (they also have a Carnaby restaurant).

Much of the menu is gluten free (with a good understanding of cross contamination). They serve great fried chicken slathered and sprinkled with Latino seasonings and flavoursome sauces and it is, frankly, amazing!

The menu at Meat Head Mexican is extensively gluten free, with Tacos using naturally gluten free traditional corn tortillas. This place comes with a number of recommendations from fellow Coeliacs and I ate here, safely, back in October 2024. I had the Birria Tacos which were great, although they were quite spicy!

Unfortunately, this was one of the photos I managed to delete… Sorry!

The Stables Market, Italian Alley, London NW1 8AH (Temporarily Closed as at March 2026)

You’ll find Tapioc Wraps undercover in the Stables Market serving authentic 100% gluten free Brazilian manioc wraps made from tapioca flour. They offer fillings that are meat, veggie or vegan… savoury and sweet. You’ll love this place… Brazilian wrap stuffed with Nutella and strawberries? They’ve got you covered. Or go pink and savoury like me!

On my most recent visit (February 2025) Tapioc Wraps was noted as ‘temporarily closed’. I’m hoping they will reopen in the market soon, but will remove/amend this listing when I have further information.

Pino’s serves traditional Indonesian street food including delicious gluten free Indonesian curry and rice. Pino’s is located under cover in the Italian Alley sector of the Camden Stables Market. I’ve not tried it yet, but they were helpful when discussing gluten free safety.

If you thought you knew ice cream, think again! The first time I tried a scoop from Chin Chin Labs in Camden, my mind was blown… It was the smoothest, silkiest ice cream I had ever had. They literally hand-make your ice cream to order… using a row of mixers and liquid nitrogen. I’ve had it several times since that first experience and the novelty and deliciousness remains as strong.

The ice cream is gluten free, as are many of the toppings and sauces and some of the desserts. I can thoroughly recommend the burnt butter caramel ice cream with chocolate fudge sauce. But whatever you do, don’t miss this one in your gluten free Camden explorations. (They also have a lab in Soho).

The After School Cookie Club has come to Camden! Located in West Yard, they offer a wide range of gluten free cookies, ice cream cookie sandwiches, cookie dough pots and cookie shakes. It’s not a completely gluten free venue, but options include Oat and Raisin Crumble, Strawberry and Marshmallow, S’mores and Peanut Choc-Caramel.

Although not 100% gluten free, Purezza (located around the corner from the main Camden Market) prides itself on inclusivity to the extent that 98% of the menu is either already gluten free or optionally gluten free. It’s also Vegan! Their pizzas are made with their own award-winning gluten free sourdough and they even offer a gluten free option on Tiramisu.

Studio 48 is an independent restaurant in Camden, set close to the market, with a relaxed, colourful vibe. While not completely gluten free, their menu is almost entirely Coeliac-friendly and they provide an extensive separate gluten free menu.

The food is American-inspired… From Smash Burgers, Fried Chicken, Steaks and Mac n Cheese… to Tacos, Salads and small plates. There’s plenty on offer for vegetarians too. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner.

Honest Burgers is one of my favourite burger restaurants. Almost their entire menu (including local and seasonal burgers, onion rings and rosemary fries) can be provided gluten free. They have excellent allergy awareness and the burgers are juicy and delicious!

If you don’t visit the restaurant in Camden (and let’s face it, there are plenty of other gluten free alternatives on offer) be sure to visit one of their other branches across the city!

The ubiquitous Nando’s Portuguese-fusion Peri Peri chicken (served with various sauces, chips and sides) seems to be in every town and every part of London. But its success is deserved… It’s simple, tasty and there are no surprises!

It’s also one of a handful of restaurant chains accredited by Coeliac UK. And while my experience tells me that accreditation is no guarantee of safety, when it comes to Nando’s, I’ve never had a bad experience. If you have an allergy or dietary need, your order will be taken and overseen by a trained manager under strict protocols.

Located close to Camden Town Underground, Leon offers a range of fast food, including healthier options. Gluten free choices are strong, including chicken and falafel bowls, rice boxes, chicken nuggets and a number of cookies and ‘bars’.

Sometimes, only a steaming bowl of gluten free ramen will do. So if that’s what you need, Wagamama is located a short stroll from the main outside Camden markets. While the gluten free menu at Wagamama has recently reduced, they do still offer carefully-created options including ramen and other broths, some rice-based dishes, a couple of small-plate options and a handful of desserts.

Pizza Express is another popular national chain restaurant accredited by Coeliac UK. They offer a clearly marked menu with a range of full-size gluten free pizzas, plus a few starters, salads and a couple of dessert options.

Located in Camden a short walk from the main markets, towards Regents Park.

103 Hampstead Rd, London NW1 3EL (Nearest Tube Station: Euston/Euston Square) *Located a fair walk from the main Camden markets.

Mexican is always a great choice for Coeliacs as a lot of the cuisine is naturally gluten free.

Mestizo is authentically Mexican (originating as a restaurant in Mexico before being brought to Madrid and London). Their menu is clearly marked for allergens and includes the option for naturally gluten free corn tortillas to replace standard wheat versions. It also includes several dessert choices.

In addition to the restaurant, Mestizo has a Mexican market where you can stock up on everything you need to cook Mexican at home.

The Primrose Bakery (located a short walk from Camden) is a well-established, pretty London bakery selling primarily cakes. They offer a very small selection of gluten free options (although can’t guarantee they are completely free from cross-contamination). To be honest, when I visited, I was pretty unimpressed. The offering felt tokenistic and I wouldn’t recommend it as a bakery to go out of your way for… If you happen to be nearby, it may be worth popping in (some people report a slightly better experience).

Located up the road from Camden Market in Kentish Town, Crêpes à la Carte offers a menu of naturally gluten free buckwheat galettes with some incredible fillings. The menu is clearly marked for allergens (standard pancakes are not safe). They also operate as a pop-up stall in various markets across London, so keep your eyes peeled!

Good F’Ing Pizza has been on the London Scene, mainly as a pop-up for some years. However Dijon (the business owner) now has a 100% gluten free Takeaway Hub at Hampstead Community Market. The Dijon Café & Pizzeria hut will be open as a café (pastries, doughnuts, bagels, focaccia sandwiches, cookies, etc) Wednesday to Friday (8am to 2pm) and Saturday & Sunday (8am to 12pm). Then serving pizza Thursday to Friday (5pm to 9pm), Saturday (12pm to 9pm) and Sunday (12pm to 6pm).

Von Crumb is a Schnitzel Café located in Belsize Park. Although not a gluten free venue, they do have a selection of gluten free schnitzel’s and sides on the menu (including safe fries). For anyone who has not ‘schnitzeled’ before, it is a flattened and tenderised piece of meat (or a vegetable alternative) that has been coated in breadcrumbs and fried until golden. I’ve not eaten here myself, but this cosy little spot is getting rave reviews from the gluten free community.

Took Took is a small, family-run Pan-Asian restaurant located in West Hampstead. With a focus on small plates and Thai street food, they have a dedicated gluten free menu, so it’s easy to know what’s safe and what isn’t. Dishes include satay chicken, Pad Thai, Thai curries and soups… and also more ‘substantial’ fish and meat options.

Venchi Ice Cream is recommended by a number of Coeliac bloggers. Some of the gelato flavours are made without gluten ingredients, although their website has a warning on all ingredient lists for possible cross contamination (mainly due to scoop and cone risk). Apparently, if you tell staff you are Coeliac, they may provide gelato from a fresh tub and use a new scoop. As I can’t verify this, be aware of the potential risk balance when considering Venchi as an option.

Anne at Little Home Baker is based slightly north of the area in Finchley. I’ve included her anyway as she sells amazing gluten free bread, cookies and cakes to order for collection and also has a designated gluten free kitchen from which she runs gluten free baking classes.

Check out her Instagram page for menu and details. Baking classes booking: Website
